Congress Passes Bill to Disclose Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will require the publication of official records associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House gave in after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

The bill next will be sent to Trump for his signature. He stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Although Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the official management of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and announced he would approve it if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were seated in a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who expressed concern he feared the measure would make public specific data of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
