Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
