An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Operations
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
After moments of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these groups, messages display black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
