Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
